Designing for the Two-Minute Visitor and the Two-Hour Visitor

A lobby installation gets seen by hundreds of people a day, and most of them are walking past on their way to a meeting. We design the surface-level read to work in under two minutes — a clear shape, an obvious behavior — while building in a slower layer of pattern that only becomes visible to someone who lingers. Low Orbit’s synchronization moments are a good example: they happen roughly every eleven minutes, deliberately too slow for a first-glance visitor to notice by accident.
