The Case for Writing Your Own Renderer

We could build most of our pieces faster using an off-the-shelf VJ or generative-art package. We don’t, mostly because those tools are built to handle the general case well, and our pieces are never the general case — a specific ceiling height, a specific projector throw distance, a specific fog density that behaves differently in July than it does in January. Writing the renderer ourselves means we can tune for the one room the piece actually lives in.
